I always try to let my clients know that getting Social Security Disability benefits is not a quick process. The Social Security Administration is one of the largest government agencies in the United States. Applications were up in 2009, and will continue to rise for the foreseeable future.
An initial application for Social Security benefits in Michigan typically takes 4-6 months before a decision is made. Some cases are decided quickly and others languish for several additional months. The majority of initial applications in Michigan are denied. If your application is denied, the next step in the process is to appeal the decision by requesting a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge.
When you appeal the decision by asking for a hearing, you will typically have a wait of 18-24 months before your hearing. Once you have your hearing, it can take 2-10 weeks before you get the Administrative Law Judge’s decision. If you are awarded benefits, it can take many more weeks before the checks begin to arrive.
